Experienced Team Set Up Unique New Specialised Marine Transportation Service
26/04/11

MCL Transboat has recently been set up as a specialised ‘one stop’ service for marine transportation, that is truly able to combine vast knowledge of marine haulage, with a worldwide transportation logistics network. Headed up by three experienced and key players in the industry, James Howells, Chris Bugler and Crispin Holworthy, MCL Transboat is to offer a complete yacht transportation service that provides the safest and most economical route for a vessel and its equipment anywhere in the world.

With a fleet of trucks and specialised boat trailers available across Europe, combined with the MCL Group’s experienced logistical transport planning team, MCL Transboat can provide haulage for either racing yacht campaigns, companies moving vessels around Europe for shows or individual owners and captains. The support team is able to give instant updates to establish exactly where each load is located and what their ETA is likely to be at the final venue. This information is vital for globetrotting raceboats, when time is of the essence and allows the logistics to dovetail to ensure that the boat and its equipment all arrive in the same place at the same time. By using MCL’s established network, the operational side can plan any combination of road or sea transport to suit the tightest and most detailed of campaign schedules.

MCL Transboat operates a “can-do” policy and James Howells said of the new division, “We have been in the business of transportation logistics for over 40 years and have always taken great pride in our proven track record of professionalism and reliability. This stems from the daily hands-on running of the business, by our team of experts who know the business best. Add in the immeasurable experience and depth of knowledge from the marine transportation industry from Chris Bugler and Crispin Holworthy and you have the best of the best - MCL Transboat.”

Crispin Holworthy, who is to head up the marine development side of MCL Transboat added, “We identified an opportunity within this area of marine transportation to raise the bar in the industry, by providing a complete service to each individual client. We can now supply a total transport solution from start to finish of the process providing instant updates throughout to the customer, an area which has been lacking in the past. Flexibility and planning are key, as well as the detail of correct loading, and understanding the sometimes delicate construction of the load with often pressing time deadlines.”

MCL Transboat:
MCL Transboat is a unique and very specialised ‘One Stop’ Marine Transport Logistics Company able to offer a complete service. The key people to head up this new division are James Howells, Managing Director and owner of MCL Logistics, Chris Bugler from Transboat, the European Boat Transport specialists and the well-known mast transportation expert Crispin Holworthy from Portacraft.

James Howells brings a wealth of experience not just from the transportation industry, but also from his extensive yachting achievements on the international stage. His vision is to change the face of the marine road transport industry and raise the bar. This can only be done with the right team for the hands-on running of the business, which is why James has elected to team up with Chris Bugler and Crispin Holworthy.

Chris Bugler and his family have been involved with boat transport for over 40 years, and quickly established a world class and respected reputation as number one in terms of European boat transportation. Transboat was his more recent accolade and has become renowned for the transport of the larger UK based powerboat builders, such as Sunseeker, Princess and Fairline, in addition more recently America’s Cup and Volvo 70 campaigns across Europe - Chris has a hands-on approach and attention to detail, in providing exactly the right trailer or truck for each project, this has been the pivotal key to his success. One of the many quotes received for recent work includes:
“I didn’t get an opportunity to really thank you and your team for the fantastic work you did on the PUMA project in both London and Galway. To say you worked miracles is an understatement and you were all a real joy to work with. You can be assured that we would recommend your company at all future opportunities”. (Richard Moore, Capitalize).

Crispin Holworthy decided nearly 30 years ago to provide a totally unique service to a niche market, by creating a specialist transport system for delicate carbon fibre yachts masts as an addition to his existing marine transport company, Portacraft. Like James, Crispin has a “can-do” attitude, having managed racing yacht campaign haulage on extremely tight deadlines. This has been successfully achieved over the years, primarily by having a good working relationship and communication skills with onshore project managers and campaign logistics teams. These projects have included campaigns such as the America’s Cup rigs at 35m in length, Volvo 70 rigs at 31.5m and Open 60 rigs at 28m, to transport across Europe. Crispin is an experienced yachtsman with global experience as a commercially endorsed Offshore Yachtmaster and has sailed and worked all his life on boats. More recently he has run a professional charter company in the Solent, which includes the last 19 years driving and managing the Official Press Boat for Skandia Cowes Week, providing close links with the international media and freelance journalists.
