AIS - Automatic Identification System
PLUG AND GO VERSION FROM OCEAN SAFETY

18/03/10

Ocean Safety has just supplied five ACR Class B AIS units to Sailing Logic for their offshore racing fleet competing in the forthcoming RORC season. The reason Sailing Logic has selected the Ocean Safety system in particular, is because it is quick and easy to install with the use of a normal PC laptop. Most other systems require specialist installation.

Although it could be considered good practice for all vessels to use an AIS system in busy waters, at night or in poor visibility, for 2010 it is a requirement under the ISAF Offshore Special Regulations for racing yachts to carry AIS for Category 0, Category 1 and Category 2 races, and is recommended for Category 3. For this year, this requirement will include the Round Ireland, Round Britain and Ireland and the Middle Sea Race.

The Ocean Safety Class B AIS transponder, the Nauticast B allows a vessel to receive information about surrounding traffic, as well as transmitting information at the same time. Details transmitted will include a vessel’s current position, speed and course as well as draft, length overall and VHF call sign.

The Nauticast B incorporates the latest technology for collision avoidance with the electronic data being exchanged either ship to ship or between vessels and Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) stations. In addition, the system provides invaluable information to Search and Rescue (SAR) authorities, not only to pinpoint a casualty, but also to collate information on surrounding shipping and their movements.

Size of the unit: 7.8 x 6.2 x 1.84” (18 x 15.8 x 4.7 cm)

Note to Editors:
Sailing Logic’s Reflex 38, formerly racing as Puma Logic and the 2009 winner of the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s ‘Yacht of the Year’ Award, has recently been re-branded Visit Malta Puma and will be competing in the Round Ireland along with her sister ship, Jaguar Logic. Their Beneteau 40.7 Playing Around Logic was the first entry into this year’s Round Britain and Ireland Race.
