BP ISLE OF GRAIN -
SAFETY SCHEME REWARDS FOR CHARITIES
20/08/07
Following the construction of four new storage tanks at BP Isle of Grain, a remarkable £16,290.00 was raised for nominated charities.
Work was restarted on the site in December 2005 and an ingenious project safety incentive
scheme was introduced, with the agreement of all contractors.
Safety performance was measured per calendar month, with targets including zero fatalities,
zero days away from work, zero recordable incidents, zero spills breaching secondary containment
or environmental damage and Advanced Safety Audits being undertaken.
When the workforce achieved these targets, donations were made by BP to charities or organisations
selected by the prime contractor on site during the work period.
The effort by all operators on site was outstanding and the money raised was distributed to each main contractor’s nominated charity.
The amounts raised were distributed as follows:
£5,145 to Demelza House Childrens hospice
£2,490 to MacMillan Cancer Support
£2,665 to Brest Cancer Care
£6,100 to Kent Miles of Smiles
ASA Safety Champion for 4Q05 was awarded to Denzil Hart, Tank Construction Supervisor for Rhyal Engineering Ltd.
Specific Safety was awarded to Keven Short, Charge hand for Rhyal Engineering Ltd for his leadership and proactive input into methods for improving safety during the construction period.
The safety scheme was managed by Linda Stanbridge, Project Manager for Air BP and Paul Davis, Terminal Manager at BP Isle of Grain. The four tanks increase storage capacity by a massive 64,000,000 (64 million) litres, supplying aircraft fuel to London’s main airports and general aviation in the South East.
