Donation of Canoes to Island Canoe Club

03/10/11

Following the theft of three kayaks from the Canoe Club in August, the Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners stepped in to support this local club with a donation to replace the stolen canoes. Dave Lutas, Chairman of the Club, was thrilled with the donation; stating “This was a most generous offer by the Commissioners, the stolen kayaks were a great loss to the club. We have an active membership and the canoes are all in demand. The whole of the club is extremely grateful for this amazing gesture, as it will enable us to continue delivering kayaking sessions for years to come”.

Mr Philip Keen, Chairman of Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners, presented the new kayaks to the Club on October 1st, a sparkling sunny Saturday, saying “we are pleased to support this Club who are very active on the river every week. They offer a great opportunity for islanders, and we are delighted to be able to help our community”. Chris Lisher, Harbourmaster at Yarmouth, was keen to stress the importance of the Canoe Club’s ethos; “Like the Harbour, the Canoe Club promotes active lifestyles on the Island and takes advantage of our beautiful landscape, excellent location, and considerable access to water!”

The three new kayaks will be available for use on the river Yar by all members of the Canoe Club, young and old. The club has held many successful canoeing events in the past year including Kayak Surf Day, Christmas Paddle, New Year’s Day Paddle, Club Gear Inspection Day, and Paddle Pathway Sessions, in addition to some terrific social events. Further information for Canoe Magazine Editors:

Isle of Wight Canoe Club started just a couple of years ago and is ideally positioned to kayak the beautiful River Yar at the western end of the Isle of Wight. The club financially assists towards the cost of the BCU level one course for club members who wish to become qualified coaches. Based from the dinghy compound just upstream from busy Yarmouth Harbour, the club already has more than 60 members from all around the island.

Upstream, there are beautiful stretches of river towards Freshwater. Downstream the river opens up into the busy but well managed harbour and, once past the entrance, there are miles of coastline to explore. Canoeists of all ages are welcome at the Club.

Some experienced sea kayakers have canoed the circle route from Yarmouth, to freshwater (with a short portage) then out to the Needles and back to Yarmouth, but great care must be taken with tidal and weather planning as the Needles Channel can be extremely dangerous.
